On Saturday William had a football game and I tell you what if there ever was a water-boy all-star MVP it would be William. He was right with the team, ready with the water as soon as they needed it. The team did great and won their game so they are in the playoffs. With their first game on Wednesday. William will still be the water boy but therapy is going well. He is actually enjoying it because the therapist chats with him and teaches him as he goes along so now it is a social outing for William. That's a win for all of us, right up until we get the bill...
While we were waiting for the game to start I wanted to go shopping which they agreed to but only long enough to pick out some snacks for the game and then they were SOOO over it. We headed to a playground because playing at the park is fun for them and easy for me. They did have tons of fun so I am glad that we choose that route.
Because October is breast cancer awareness month the team decided to go the pink route for their game. William put in a little pink hair extension. Emmerlyn also found him a pink bandanna and he said that was all he could handle. (Which was good because we had NOTHING else pink that he could wear. I need to invest in some tall pink socks for next time.)
Emmerlyn got her pigtails in seahawks colors and was super pumped to cheer them on. Brevick looked smashing in his Saints sway. Charley and Anchor were running around like crazy and were unavailable for pictures.
We had a lot of fun at the game and I am sad that William couldn't play. I am also glad that football season is winding up just because we have been so busy.
Sunday dawned with what felt like fridged hurricane strength winds. We put ourselves together and blew ourselves into the car. Church was the usual but now it will be every week for and hour which is nice and hard all in one.. Anchor did pretty well sitting on the floor unzipping and untying Ben's shoes. Brevick on the other hand just couldn't handle it. After attempts from every possible angle I ended up carrying him out of the chapel (Which is NOT an easy feat considering he is the size of a small third grader and he was livid). When we got outside I decided that we were going to start walking home. I opened the van and since I didn't have my phone with me I left a note for Ben on the seat put my jacket on Brevick over his suit coat so he wouldn't get cold and I stole Anchors blanket (please don't tell him, he would not be understanding of my desperate plight) and we headed out. We started with the easy part of the walk but with each turn the walk got steeper until we were trudging up the hill. Brevick asked when we would stop and I said that we would when Dad picked us up. So we walked on. We approached the spot where we could take a short cut. Up the Stairway to Heaven. We paused and Brevick asked if we were going to cross the street and I thought for a minute and said, Yep. We crossed the street and looked up from the bottom. Brevick informed me repeatedly that those stairs were hard and that it would be better to just take the hill. "I know" I responded, "but since we aren't going to get to heaven by feeling the Spirit in church, we were going to have to get their somehow. This was the best option for us at the time." Up we went. We got halfway and paused to sit and look at the view for a minute. Brevick noticed that we could not see the church from there and I said that since we couldn't see our starting point we were unable to appreciate how far we had come. We got up and finished the climb. The view from the top was beautiful. I pointed out that now that the worst of our journey was over we could see the church where we had started. We talked about being reverent and remember to measure our progress from the beginning not just from what we can see at the time. We finished the little bit of the walk that was left and went inside. "Well, at least we beat them home" Brevick sighed as he hung up my jacket. Aka dropped it on the floor in the mudroom.
I texted Ben from the house phone and then called him. He hadn't left the church yet. He was searching high and low for us and was livid. Apparently my note had blown off when he opened his door.
I think it was a great learning experience for both of us and even as I am typing this I see more in it. I paid a high price though, my legs and arms were fine, the hike itself wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. My ears and head however did not fair so well. I don't do well with cold wind on my ears, they just ache. Well with the prolonged exposure my ears were aching and my head ached like relief would never come. (It actually still hurts today.) I laid down in my bed and wrapped my head in a heating pad and stayed there for hours. It was excruciating. I truly hope that Brevick has learned his lesson well, at least until the warm weather comes back!!
Later in the evening we went through our Come Follow Me. I have been having people write down their thoughts on a piece of paper each day during the week and putting them in a bowl and then on Sunday we pull them out and talk about why that touched them or they ask questions about things they didn't understand. We usually have good discussions and it was a good way to change things up a bit. Because Brevick is not quite ready to write by himself he is tasked with drawing a picture of what we read that day in the scriptures or something he learned.
I found this little picture in the bowl. When I asked him to explain it he said "oh, Jesus will protect us when we need him." I asked if that was Jesus in the front guarding us? "No, he is the one behind holding us."
I think that there innocent perspective of a child can be so profound.
We also did our family fire escape plan so Emmerlyn could turn it into school. We even poked the fire alarm so the kids knew what it would sound like and what to do when it went off. Hopefully we have it down and hopefully we never have to enact it.
